Description

For a landscape project on my degree course, I chose to drift into the abstract, so to speak. For this shot of the sea I used a long exposure (about 30 seconds) with lots of ND filters in the evening, to achieve the smooth look. Hope you like!

Haha, my mistake. I didn't think it needed saying but I've been looking at it for too long - it's a long exposure of the ocean. (Now added into the description, sorry about that!)

Ok, I see what you mean. I've really got into minimalist colours and tones at the moment. Have you see the work of Nick Hughes? http://www.nicholas-hughes.net/ I was very much inspired by him, not that I would presume my work to be of his standard of course :p

What I was trying to do was revert back to the basics. Images are just lines and forms and colours that are pleasing to the eye - I wanted to show the most simple form of that, similar to the original modernist ideas.

Thanks for you comment!

Nice try....I can see your point....maybe playing with levels and saturation can help?

I see what you are aiming for.:)

Next time try trees like he does or maybe a ship on the sea.
Looking forward to seeing it.

A bold attempt - i think for the abstract to really kick in though you probably need more 'perfect' conditions. The long exposure does well at giving the sea a smooth uniformity but there are distinct shades at bottom right and just below the horizon - these bring back that it's a photo. There's also a tint of pink in the sky towards the top.
I'm assuming from your title and description that you are seeking to achieve a smooth transition through the sea and sky while still retaining a subtle shift of hue at the horizon. I think this would be quite difficult to achieve with such a wide panorama - what about zooming in to a smaller area so you would not be so much at the mercy of natural 'variables' (like inconvenient clouds and patches of sea weed affecting the colour of the sea).
Using a long exposure to smooth out the sea is a good technique - maybe if the sea was actually rougher it would look calmer using this technique because it would be more obviously smoothed.
Might be interesting to try this at sunset, not including the sun itself but a section of sky to one side, and a long exposure on the sea - just wondering how the sea would look picking up some of the sky's reflection.
-----------
Now i come to look at this a second time i notice from your description that this is for a 'landscape' project and you refer to 'drifting' into the abstract - so maybe i am wrong to think you were aiming for a 'purely' abstract image... as such the elements that I referred to as distracting are possibly essential - perhaps they could do with being a bit stronger even, so that they don't look accidental - or maybe not - the more i look at it the more i start to feel it - i'm enjoying this image, it's making me think.

Colors are nice, maybe composition could be better.
Keep experimenting!
